Avalanche courses - Winter 2007 - 2008


Monthly avalanche awareness classes: Cost $120/person

Dates: Friday(6-9pm) & Saturday(8am-4pm) December 7 & 8, 2007, Friday(6-9pm) & Saturday(8am-4pm) January 4 & 5, 2008, Friday(6-9pm) & Sunday(8am-4pm) February 1 & 3, 2008 or Friday(6-9pm) & Saturday(8am-4pm) March 7 & 8, 2008

Instruction includes: Introduction to rescue skills and avalanche beacon searches, route finding, snow pack evaluation and minimizing exposure to hazards. Designed as a first avalanche course, or short refresher, this class is ideal for backcountry skiers, snowboarders, mountaineers and snowshoers wishing to make informed route-finding decisions and mitigate risk while traveling in avalanche-prone terrain.

Friday’s lectures will encompass snow science terminology, avalanche types and formation, rescue, hazard evaluation, terrain, snowpack layering, stability tests, weather, and the human factor. Instructors will use anecdotes, slides, powerpoint presentations, and other visual aids to present these topics. A Q & A forum and plan for the next day will conclude the evening. The field session will be an applied review of the above topics. Students will travel on skins or snowshoes a short distance into the backcountry. Instructors will work with no more than 6 students each to dig snowpits, perform stability tests, practice beacon search and rescue scenarios, travel up and downhill employing avalanche-hazard mitigation procedures, and teaching safe route-finding skills.

Intro to Backcountry Touring and Avalanche Awareness Course
: Cost $280/person

Dates: Friday(6-9pm), Saturday(8am-4pm) & Sunday(8-4pm) February 1-3, 2008.

Instruction includes: Add a day of backcountry skiing or snowboarding to the standard Avalanche Awareness class. Learn how to use skins and descend variable off-piste snow and terrain. Then on Sunday be able to concentrate on snow stability tests, route-finding, and rescue skills. For those with little or no experience using backcountry equipment, yet interested in using the gear and gaining some backcountry experience before participating in the avalanche course.

Level I Avalanche Course
: Cost $190/person

Dates: Friday(6-9pm), Saturday(8am-8pm) & Sunday(8am-5pm) December 7-9, 2007, January 25-27 or March 14-16, 2008.

Instruction includes: Learn safe travel in avalanche terrain and recognition of weather, snow pack and terrain factors contributing to avalanche hazard. Dig snow pits and perform field tests to recognize weak and strong layers in snow pack and practice efficient rescue with avalanche beacons. No previous avalanche education necessary

This 24-hour course is sanctioned by the American Avalanche Association, and students will receive a nationally recognized certificate upon completion. It is designed for those with or without previous avalanche education or experience, seeking a comprehensive and structured course. The schedule includes lectures in Salt Lake City on Friday evening, and a mix of field sessions and lectures on both Saturday and Sunday in Alta and the surrounding backcountry. The graduate of this course will understand the basics of snow science, stability evaluation, safe travel, and rescue, and be ready to make informed decisions in avalanche terrain.

Level II Avalanche Course:
Cost $225/person

Dates: Friday(6-9pm), Saturday(8am-8pm) & Sunday(8am-5pm) February 22-24, 2008.

Instruction includes: Review and expand upon material learned in Level I. Learn to identify snow crystal types and processes leading to them; how to record and interpret information gained from snow pits, stability tests, weather and other factors contributing to snow strength. Practice complex, multiple-beacon rescues.

This American Avalanche Association sanctioned course is oriented toward towards those who have taken a Level I, or equivalent course, and have significant backcountry experience under their belt. Ski patrollers, winter search and rescue personnel, mountain guides, and other serious winter mountain travelers often enroll in this intensive class. Classroom sessions will be held in Salt Lake City Friday and in Alta over the weekend. Field sessions will be in the backcountry surrounding Alta. EUMA is proud to have some of the top professionals in American Avalanche Education as instructors on this advanced course. Their insights and experience will enable graduates of this course to feel confident to plan and lead backcountry travel, perform and professionally document test profiles and other field observations, forecast instability and danger, address human factors, and conduct multiple-burial companion recovery.
