Mountaineering programs
(Winter & Summer programs available)

The feeling of elation upon reaching the summit of a high Wasatch Peak is heightened by the challenges of winter conditions. November-May mountaineering is climbing on a mix of snow, ice and rock using crampons and ice axe, typically after an approach on skis or snowshoes.

The skills and experience gained on one and two-day Wasatch ascents are ideal preparation for future climbs on the major peaks of the world. Rental gear is available.

Basic snow mountaineering: Cost $160/person (7am-3pm)

Dates: Saturday April 12 or May 3, 2008

Instruction includes: Instruction in alpine snow climbing, proper use of ice axe and crampons and self-arrest techniques.

Excellent preparation for spring / summer climbs in the Rockies, Cascades, Alaska, etc. Instructor will take you through a progression from climbing in balance, using duck-foot, crossover-step, sidestep, and plunge-step, to self-belay with piolet cane, high and low dagger, and piolet traction, and on to flat-footing and front-pointing with crampons. Finally the rope will be incorporated, emphasizing proper tension, stepping over the rope for turns, and limitations / dangers of being roped on steep, exposed terrain. Self-arrest with the axe, a last resort, but an essential skill to know, will also be taught. After building confidence arresting falls on the seat, climbers will progress to upside-down and backward. Knowing how to stop oneself enables a climber to move without anxiety over hard snow.

Crevasse rescue skills
: Cost $160/person (7am-3pm)

Dates: Saturday April 19 or May 10, 2008

Instruction includes: Instruction in glacial travel, belaying, snow anchors, raising systems and ascending a rope.

The perfect prep course for ascents of Rainier, Denali, or other crevassed routes.
The instructor will demonstrate belaying, and rope tension between climbers as the group ascends to a simulated crevasse location. The guide will explain “reading” glacial terrain for the safest route. Use of snow pickets, dead man anchors, bollards and snow flukes will be demonstrated by the instructor and practiced by participants. The bulk of the day will be spent learning the knots, hitches, and pulley systems involved in crevasse rescue and other raising situations. Participants will each build a 3:1 system and learn to escape a belay, belay themselves to a crevasse lip, pad the lip, and raise or lower an injured companion. At the end of the day the group will fit prussiks and use them to ascend a rope. Each participant should bring 30 feet of 5 or 6 mm static line, or 3 short prussik loops and a foot prussik.

Instruction includes: During a two-day overnight seminar, learn advanced mountaineering skills and snow camping in preparation for Denali or other expedition climbing.

En route, participants will learn route selection, travel protocols for avalanche terrain, pace and how to climb on skis or snowshoes with a load. A solid, weatherproof winter camp will be established using deadman anchors and snow walls. The instructor will review the use of ice axe, crampons, and ropes, and lead a self-arrest practice session. In the evening, participants will learn how to run stoves, melt snow for water, cook, and stay warm and comfortable in the high altitude, winter environment. The second day will likely include the ascent of a spectacular 11,000-foot Wasatch peak using crampons, ice axe and ropes. Participants will learn how to stay safe in exposed, alpine terrain and climb efficiently on moderately difficult snow and rock.
